Choosing Colors for Your Brand

When it comes to branding, choosing the right colors to represent your business is just as important as your name and logo. You want your brand’s colors to represent your business in a meaningful and thoughtful way. Color is a powerful tool to affect mood and stimulate senses. Choosing the right ones is crucial.

Where do you start? First, spend some time researching color theory and color psychology. These concepts are truly fascinating and will help you make smart choices when choosing colors for your brand. Ever wonder while almost all the fast food restaurants use some combination of red, orange, or yellow? These colors are proven to stimulate your appetite and trigger hunger, and thus veer towards the drive-thru.

Next, pull up an image of a color wheel. Once you’ve figured out your main color, use a color wheel to choose a complementary color for a secondary/accent option. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the wheel and can be a foolproof way to choose a cohesive palette for your brand.

Lastly, ignore personal biases. Just because your favorite color has always been pink and you like to wear pink shirts, doesn’t mean pink is the right choice for your business and brand. Think about the core values of your business and what it stands for. What emotion do you want your business to evoke? What colors truly “fit” your business?

With a little research and careful consideration your brand’s colors will be a true reflection of it’s mission and represent it well.
