Marketing Tips for Small Businesses

Tip #1 – Maintain consistent brand awareness.

Does your website domain and social media handles all match up? If not, it could be quite confusing for your customers. Imagine that a hypothetical business, Hal’s Tuna Market, has the domain halstunamarket.com. Their Twitter handle is @gethalstuna, Instagram handle is @halstuna, and Facebook username is halstunamarket-21. Sure, they are all a variation of the same business name, but this can be confusing for a customer when navigating between the various sites. Securing consistent names can be challenging due to domains and social handles already being in use. It may take a little effort, but finding a name that can be used across the board will give your business an edge.

Disclaimer: Hal’s Tuna Market is a hypothethical business example inspired by one of our rescue cats named “Hal”.

Tip #2 – Make it easy for your customers.

Provide the path of least resistance for customers to buy your products and services. That might look like an easy to navigate e-commerce website, or knowledgeable well-trained employees answering the phone to complete the sale. For brick and mortar stores, a thoughtful layout with intentional product placement will make shopping easy for your customers and turn them into repeat buyers.

Tip #3 – Don’t forget about the experience.

The experience of buying your product can be just as important as the product itself. Often times, a company can sell an average product, but if the buying experience is exceptional, customers will keep coming back for more. Creating a great customer experience is essential for a successful small business.

Tip #4 – Retarget potential customers.

The bad news is that most people who visit your website for the first time will leave without making a purchase. The good news is that with effective retargeting campaigns, you can bring them back! With a retargeting campaign, potential customers are reminded of your business and product when ads are strategically placed on other sites they visit after they leave yours. Retargeting campaigns can be achieved through Google, Facebook, and many other platforms.

Tip #5 – Track your KPIs.

KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are specific metrics you can track to help determine the overall success and effectiveness of your business’s marketing efforts. Some examples of KPIs include Return on Investment (ROI), Return on Ad Spend (ROAS), Conversion Rate, Website Visitors, Social Media Engagement, and Referral Traffic. KPIs can help you figure out what is working or what needs to change when it comes to effectively marketing your business.
